We’re absolutely thrilled to share our new website with you, giving you a really good insight into how we operate within the Three Little Birds nursery group. It’s the first of many exciting changes...
Three Little Birds
Harpenden Day Nursery
Welcome to Harpenden Day Nursery. The nursery is set in a beautiful, old, detached property, in a quiet area just outside Harpenden town centre.
The nursery prides itself on creating a home from home feel for our children and families and we have ongoing positive feedback from parents, new and existing, that reflects this. We have three small rooms which all have a cosy feel and offer a nurturing and stimulating environment with high quality and educational activities tailored to the children’s needs.
We have a big, beautiful, natural garden which the children love exploring and using the climbing frame and slides, making mud pies in the mud kitchen and climbing in and out of tyres. Our garden offers a holistic environment covering different aspects and endless opportunities such as puddles for jumping in, natural materials, gardening and investigating bugs in our mini bug hotels. We are very lucky to have our own apple tree in the garden, apples from which we regularly use to make home made dishes.
We are open from 7.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, 51 weeks of the year. We close for the week between Christmas and New Year and bank holidays.
We are situated in a residential area, only a short walk away from Harpenden town. The train station is a 10 – 15 minute walk away with fast and direct train links into London which is ideal for our parents who commute via public transport. We are located in a prime catchment area of popular primary and secondary schools.
It is our wish and aim to deliver high quality education and childcare which is age-appropriate and suitable for all children and their individual needs. We believe that loving and secure relationships allow children to flourish. Our key person approach allows us to meet each child’s emotional needs and respond sympathetically to their feelings and behaviours.
Our experienced practitioners enjoy forming partnerships with families to enhance the wellbeing of each child and build upon their joy, happiness and contentment. The roots of our curriculum stem from our children, staff and input from families. We nurture children so they can learn themselves through exploration, experimentation and decision making. This holistic approach towards learning allows our skilled staff to create learning opportunities through children’s strengths and interests – scaffolding their development through the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. We create and support their journey as lifelong learners.
Our nursery manager
Hi, I'm Sandra Harvey the Manager of Harpenden Day Nursery. I have over 25 years of childcare experience - 15 years of which are as a Manager.
Over the course of my career, I am very proud to have achieved three consecutive Ofsted 'outstanding' ratings and worked with an amazing team. I have a BTEC National Certificate in Nursery Nursing, Paediatric First Aid qualification and ensure I keep up to date with all compliance training and anything that will further enhance my knowledge of childcare & education.
I am extremely passionate about providing exceptional care to all our children and as a parent and grandparent I know how important it is to be able to leave a child in a safe, secure and nurturing environment.
Working at Harpenden Day Nursery is a joy and I am proud to have a staff team that are passionate about being the best that they can be and who care so much about providing a happy place for children to thrive in.
Our Nursery is divided into three age groups; Babies & Toddlers, Nursery and Pre-school. Each of these has a room leader and a team of staff to look after your child.
Baby and Toddler Room
In our Baby and Toddler Room we have lots of fun engaging in sensory activities, which include mark-making, allowing them to explore textures, singing songs and rhymes using our prop box and looking at family pictures in the book area.
Our staff are very caring and help to ensure a smooth transition from home to nursery by closely working in partnership with our parents and babies ensuring all needs are met.
The children have access to a wide array of activities which are continuously out such as the role play kitchen and dolls house, mark-making activities using a variety of tools and building materials in the construction area.
Our children will participate in self-registration when they come in to nursery in the morning which helps develop independence. They are very inquisitive which is why we offer a variety of child-led and adult-led activities for them to explore, giving them the opportunity to extend their knowledge and understanding.
They enjoy looking out of the window and talking about features in the environment and love to listen to the trains going by.
Our Preschool Room embraces free flow into the garden which allows the children to take part in both indoor and outdoor activities. It also encourages exercise and a healthy lifestyle with them running around, building obstacle courses and we talk to them throughout the day about healthy food and drink options.
Children will take part in group circle times over the day which provide them with learning opportunities that encourage creativeness and readiness for school. They frequently engage in active learning whereby they will learn the phonetic letters of the alphabet, learning letters and sounds. They will also learn representations of numbers, focusing on numbers in their everyday environment.
Our Preschool children are encouraged to take turns in listening to each other, which is very valuable in encouraging confidence and self-esteem.
Ensuring your child feels safe, welcomed and loved in our nursery is really important to us. We offer tailored and flexible settling-in sessions – so you and your child are gradually introduced to nursery life and feel comfortable. Your child will have a key-person assigned to them, who will be introduced during your settle sessions, allowing time for a bond to form and for us to understand your child’s unique interests and needs. A secure relationship with their key-person will provide your child with a strong foundation for lifetime learning.
Please view our Settling in Policy to see our settle session procedure throughout the current lockdown period.
We also accept nursery fees via direct debit, the government Tax Free Childcare scheme and childcare vouchers. You can talk to your Nursery Manager to find out more or visit www.gov.uk/tax-free-childcare to see if you can benefit from the scheme.
We are pleased to be able offer the 15 hour Funded Early Education Entitlement for all children from the term after they turn 3 years old. In addition, we offer the 2 year old and 30 hour Funded Early Education Entitlement for families that qualify. Please speak with your Nursery Manager to find out if you are eligible and for more information.
